• The City of Lawrence is holding its first Oktoberfest celebration with “Lagers in Lawrence Oktoberfest” on Sat., Sept., 29 from 3-7 p.m. The event will be held at the Civic Plaza, 9230 Memorial Park Dr., and will feature 15-20 breweries giving out unlimited samples in all styles of beer. Tasting glasses will be provided, or you can bring your own stein. Tickets are $30 for general admission, $10 for designated drivers. A portion of the proceeds go to support local charities. This is a 21+ only event.
• Get an early jump on holiday shopping at the Irvington Presbyterian Country Fair on Sat., Sept. 29 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. There’s always a lot of great stuff at the fair, and this year there will be vendors with locally made goodies as well. The church is located at 55 Johnson Ave. right behind the Irvington library.
• TURN Festival at Paramount School, 3020 Nowland Ave., will be held Sept. 29 from noon-6 p.m. The event is free and gives visitors a chance to learn all about fresh food in workshops, plus lots of entertainment for kids and families. There will also be food for sale, and a beer tent.
• Spend a day with words at the Youth Writers Series @ E. 38th Street Library, Mon., Oct. 1 from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. School-age children are invited for free sessions focusing on writing, poetry and theatre. The focus of this session will be on writing poetry. Call 317-275-4350 to register. Then, hang out from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. to hear featured guest Ty Thompson, author of “Rated L by Poetic Endurance” as part of the 2018 Author Series. The library is located at 5420 E. 38th St.
• The (White) House of Horrors is the latest production of Candlelight Theater, held at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, and will run Oct. 12, 13, 19, 20 and 23 with the first showing at 8 p.m., and on Oct. 28 with the first showing at 2 p.m. A new performance begins every 30 minutes and there will be six per evening. Performances travel from room to room throughout the house and last approximately 70 minutes. Tickets are available online at bhpsite.org and Eventbrite. The Benjamin Harrison site is located at 1230 Delaware St.
• Hollywood Place is participating in the Great Indy Cleanup on Sat., Oct. 6. Volunteers are asked to gather on Ewing St. just north of East Washington St. at 9 a.m. to help clean the street gutters, curbs, and sidewalks within the neighborhood. Afterwards, all volunteers and neighbors are invited to attend a Block Party to be held on N. Ewing St. from 1:30 p.m. ‘till 7 p.m. There will be events and activities for both children and adults along with free hot dogs, snacks, and drinks.
• Congratulations to the recipients of the IPL Project GreenSpace honorees. Two eastside projects will be partnering with IPL and the city to create and enhance green spaces. One is the Capital City Church of Christ GreenSpace at 865 E. 42nd St., which will include a serenity park and garden for neighbors. Gethsemane Lutheran Church at 6810 E. 10th St. will also be creating a greenspace for wildflowers and native plants, after the invasive plants are removed.
