• The pool at Brookside Park is closed for the rest of the swimming season due to a mechanical problem. Please consider going to another of our great east side park pools, including Ellenberger, Willard, Garfield, Douglass, or the Washington Park spray park.
• An outdoor vendor section will be a new feature of this year’s Irvington Presbyterian Church Country Fair, and applications are now being accepted. The vendor application for the Country Fair, sponsored by the IPC Women, is now available in the church office and may be downloaded from the IPC Web site at  www.irvpresby.org. The Fair is Sat., Sept. 29, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the church, 55 Johnson Ave. Vendors can apply for a 10×10 space in the parking lot, which includes a 6’ table and a chair.  Applications are due Aug. 17. • The Auxiliary to Community Hospital East will sponsor a $5 Jewelry and Accessories Sale on Tues., July 24 from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.; Wed., July 25 from 6:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Thurs., July 26 from 6:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. The sale will be held in the Community Hospital East Breezeway near the main lobby. Proceeds will benefit hospital programs/services. For further information, please call Volunteer Services at 317-355-5120. The hospital is located at 1500 N. Ritter Ave.
• The Poets Laureate of Lawrence monthly program will be held July 24 from 7-9 p.m.  The Theater at the Fort on Indy’s east side, 8920 Otis Ave. This month the featured author is Natalie Solmer.  Natalie is a poet, mother, and professor, as well as the founder and editor-in-chief of The Indianapolis Review.
• The 20th annual Indiana Brewers’ Cup, the Indiana State Fair’s craft beer competition, was held at the Indiana Farmer’s Coliseum on July 14. After a weekend full of tasting and judging, Daredevil Brewing Company of Speedway was named Grand Champion Brewery. Several eastside-connected breweries did well, placing high in various categories — Sun King, Centerpoint, Bier Brewing Co., and Wooden Bear of Greenfield.
• Indian Black Expo Summer Celebration will be taking place all weekend with a health fair, leadership summit, arts programming, and lots more, including great music. Visit summercelebration.net for more information about the  upcoming schedule.
• Early discount tickets for the Indiana State Fair are available until Aug. 2. Presale tickets are only $8, and family 4-packs with a parking pass are only $30. Visit www.indianastatefair.com and click on the Discount Tickets tab. The fair runs from Aug. 3-19.
• The Benton House Book Sale is this weekend. Fri. July 20 from 5-8, Sat. July 21 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sun. July 22 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., get great deals on books, CDs, DVDs, and much more. Proceeds go to support the historic Benton House, 312 S. Downey Ave.
