• The death of Boone County Deputy Jacob Pickett in the line of duty is a tragic reminder of the sacrifices police make to protect the public each and every day. He was mortally wounded while assisting Lebanon police officers serving a warrant. His funeral will be on Friday, March 9 in Brownsburge. All Boone County offices will be closed in his memory.
• Indiana’s connection to the Oscars on March 4 ran a bit deeper than you would imagine. The Best Picture Winner, The Shape of Water, featured actor Doug Jones as the “Amphibian Man” who is the lead’s love interest. Jones was born in Indianapolis and went to Bishop Chatard High School.
• East side businesses Cat Head Press and Ash & Elm Cider Co. have teamed up for a button-making event on March 22 at 7 p.m. Cat Head Press will provide the supplies to make a variety of buttons, and you get a cider to boot. Tickets are only $15. Visit brownpapertickets.com to reserve your space.
• Congratulations to the Warren Central Jazz Ensemble, who walked away with a Gold rating at the ISSMA Jazz District Contest March 2. WC’s competition choir Spirit was awarded first place in the Avon Vocal Invitational March 3.
• City-County Councilor Zach Adamson will be hosting a job fair March 26 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Martin University, 2186 N. Sherman Dr. Many east side employers will be on hand ready to talk about opportunities with their companies. There will also be career coaches and more resources.
• Otterbein Neighborhood Association will hold a meeting Thurs., March 15 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 5009 E. 21st St.
• There will be a 1.5 mile guided nature walk of Pogues Run Trail up to the Nowland Ave. bridge March 25 at 10 a.m. Meet at 1125 Brookside Ave. by where the Winter Market is held on Saturdays. Pathways Over Pogues is sponsoring the walk, as well as a major fundraiser for the organization’s efforts to raise funds to restore the historic bridge on March 27 at 6 p.m. at the Tick Tock Lounge, 2602 E. 10th St. The fundraiser will feature a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and lots more.
• The Woodruff Place Neighborhood Association will meet March 12 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Woodruff Place Baptist Town Hall, 735 Woodruff Place East Dr.
• A long-standing Irvington business, Bookmamas, will be closing up shop after many years of providing books, events, and community support. Kathleen Angelone shared her love for books with thousands of people over the years, and was a tireless champion for local authors and their work. Kathleen and her little crew of bookworms were steadfast contributors to the east side in general and Irvington in particular. Also Irvington Vinyl, who shares the space (Rick Wilkerson owner) is liquidating too — so check out all the new vinyl releases as well as the used ones and CDs. Be sure to stop by the Bookmamas (9 S. Johnson Ave.) liquidation sale beginning Friday, March 9 for 40% off everything in the shop and pick up some bargains, and also wish Kathleen & Rick well.
