Phony debt collectors can be threatening and persistent. Unfortunately many people are intimidated by these e-mails and phone calls into paying debts they never incurred. A BBB “F” rated Florida based company, ACS Inc., has been contacting consumers in Central Indiana demanding payment of phony debts. BBBs across the country and in Central Indiana have received reports from consumers regarding debt collectors representing ACS.
If debt collector contacts you:
• Ask the caller for their name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number
• Get a written “validation notice.” All debt collectors are required to provide this. If they cannot provide that document, do not pay the debt.
• Do not be intimidated by threats. The police will not come and arrest you.
• Do not give the caller any personal information such as your name, address, bank account, credit card. If they are legitimate, they should already have all of that information.
