INDIANAPOLIS – It opened 60 years ago on Broadway, yet its message continues to resonate today. The powerful and poignant musical West Side Story is now on stage at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre for performances now through Oct. 1.
The enduring Shakespeare tale of Romeo and Juliet is adapted by Arthur Laurents and taken to the streets of New York City’s West Side. After meeting at a dance, Maria and Tony become star-crossed lovers who are caught between opposing gangs: the Sharks and the Jets. But they are able to find love despite the ongoing tension of prejudice, hate, and rebellion that surrounds them.
Leonard Bernstein’s music, coupled with Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics, create an emotional and exhilarating musical experience with incredible songs including “America,” “I Feel Pretty,” “Maria,” “Tonight” and “Somewhere.”
These iconic numbers performed with energetic dancing complete the passionate musical that earned West Side Story two Tony Awards. The movie adaptation that followed earned the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Beef & Boards welcomes newcomers Glenn DeVar and Courtney Cheatham in the roles of Tony and Maria, along with Higgins as Bernardo. Marisa Rivera, previously seen at Beef & Boards as Velma in Chicago, plays the fiery role of Anita.
There are 47 performances of West Side Story in the intimate atmosphere of Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. Tickets range from $42.50 to $67.50, and include Chef Odell Ward’s dinner buffet, fruit & salad bar, unlimited coffee, tea and lemonade. Ample free parking is also available.
