INDIANAPOLIS — The Scecina Memorial High School Crusaders are the 2017 Class 2A IHSAA softball state champions.
The Crusaders beat the Elwood Panthers 6-2 on June 10 in the championship game at Ben Davis High School. Elwood was the top-ranked 2A team in the Indiana Girls Sports Coaches Association’s final poll of the season. Scecina, which was ranked sixth, already had beaten Elwood twice in the regular season. The Crusaders finished the season 26-4 and were undefeated in the Indiana Crossroads Conference.
After the championship game, the IHSAA Executive Committee announced that Scecina’s Rachel Cox was the winner of the Class 2A Mental Attitude Award. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance presented a $1,000 scholarship to Scecina in the name of Rachel Cox. Rachel plays left field and batted .316 during the season. She has signed to play softball Hanover College in the fall. She plans to major in business marketing and minor in photography.
