INDIANAPOLIS — On May 26 the Indianapolis near eastside group I am Ubuntu: Indy East Diversity and Inclusion (neareastdiversity.weebly.com) won two top prizes at the Neighborhoods USA (www.nusa.org) conference in Omaha, Nebraska:
• Grand Prize winner: Neighborhood of the Year
• 1st place winner: Multi Neighborhood Partnerships
The 2016 Near Eastside ReEntry Expo took place on April 23, 2016 on the Indianapolis’ near eastside with over 100 attendees participating in community dialogues, service provider fair, free haircuts for reentering neighbors, a catered dinner, live entertainment and family friendly activities. Near eastside neighbors who have been impacted by incarceration came to the event to connect with neighborhood resources, employers, neighborhood organizations and community leaders.
By providing contributions, the following organizations enabled six Indianapolis near eastside neighbors (Beth Barton, Tim Barton, Jomo Cole, Charene Cole, Valerie Davis, CoraLyn Turentine) to attend the NUSA conference: Community Hospital East, Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center, John H. Boner Neighborhood Centers, LISC Indianapolis, NESCO, and Rivoli Park Neighborhood.
I Am Ubuntu: IndyEast Diversity and Inclusion Taskforce was formed in the spring of 2015. It is led by neighbors representing the 20 registered neighborhoods in the Near Eastside of Indianapolis.
The Second annual Near Eastside ReEntry Expo will be held on Sat., June 17 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Englewood Christian Church at 57 N. Rural St. A community screening and panel discussion about the movie “13th” will be held on Fri,, June 16 from 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. at Brookside Community Church 1035 N. Olney St.
