High Weed and Grass Season Begins

INDIANAPOLIS — The City’s high weeds and grass program is starting once again.  Indianapolis property owners are reminded to do their part by maintaining their lots and yards.
Vegetation over 12 inches in height is considered high weeds and grass per the City-County Code of Ordinances and beginning this week, the City of Indianapolis will start dispatching inspectors and launch proactive outreach in communities that have seen the highest rates of weeds and grass violations. Additionally, the City will begin responding to citizen reports submitted to the Mayor’s Action Center (MAC), with BNS inspectors and mowing vendors working to encourage property owners to properly maintain lots and yards.
Property owners who receive a notice of violation letter have five days from the date the notice is mailed to mow their overgrown property. If a property owner fails to mow the property, the City will send a mowing vendor to mow the property and invoice the property owner for the service at a rate of at least $363 per lot.
Last year, 17,383 high weeds and grass complaints on private property were reported by citizens to the Mayor’s Action Center with 3,161 violations generated from BNS sweeps activity. A total number of 20,618 properties were investigated for the whole year. Investigation of these properties resulted in 15,452 violations of which 11,458 properties were abated by City vendors. Business and Neighborhood Services’ goal for 2017 is to see a decrease in the number of City abated properties by increasing education and outreach efforts, providing resources to citizens, and working with community associations and groups to identify properties in violation.
Residents may report a high weeds and grass violation by calling the Mayor’s Action Center (MAC) at 327-4MAC, by going online to RequestIndy at www.indy.gov/requestindy or by using the RequestIndy Mobile Application for smartphones.
