Applause!: Dec. 23-Jan. 5

• The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) is teaming up with Indy Parks to offer residents several drop-off sites throughout the city to dispose of their live Christmas trees this season. From Dec. 26 through Jan. 31, trees can be dropped off from dusk until dawn at the following Indy Parks locations. All ornaments, tinsel, lights, tree stands and other non-organic decorative materials must be removed from trees before dropping off. Drop-off locations for this year’s disposal are: Broad Ripple Park (1610 Broad Ripple Ave.) south lot, Ellenberger Park (5301 E. St. Clair St.) west of pool in main parking lot, Garfield Park (2432 Conservatory Drive) MacAllister Center, Perry Park (451 E. Stop 11 Road) soccer field parking lot, and Sahm Park (6801 E. 91st St.) soccer field parking lot. The trees are recycled for use in landscaping such as mulch.
• All Indianapolis Public Library locations will be closed on Dec. 24, 25 and 26 for the Christmas holiday, except the InfoZone, located within The Children’s Museum at 3000 N. Meridian St., which will be open on Dec. 26 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. All I Library locations will be closed on Jan. 1 and 2, 2017 for the New Year’s holiday, except the InfoZone, which will be open each day from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
• Flat12 Bierwerks, 414 Dorman St., will hold their first Pints for Parks on Jan. 11 from 5-8 p.m. The event will support the Broad Ripple Dog Park, with $1 from every locally made beer sale supporting the maintenance and upkeep on the park.
• Join Amy Bartner and Leslie Bailey for a workshop on the art of developing a story about your organization or business and successfully pitching it to the media. The event will be held at the Ruckus Makerspace at 1125 East Brookside Avenue, Door G10 on Mon., Jan. 9 from 6:00-7:30pm. The event is free but registration is required on EventBrite (www.eventbrite.com, search for “creating your story”).
• Kudos to IMPD and other city agencies for the success of “Operation New Normal,” a social services sweep on Dec. 13 that focused on the New York-Michigan St./Grant-Linwood area on the near eastside. Officers went door to door offering help and providing a variety of services, including health care, food assistance, and quality of life issues. Santa also made an appearance!
• The Marion County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Selection Committee at the Indianapolis Foundation recently awarded scholarships to several students, including Abigail Strahla of Beech Grove High School, Isabella Spriggs of Herron High School, and Jazmine Brownlow of Manual High School. These students will receive a four-year, full tuition scholarship to a public or private college or university in Indiana.

Everyone at the Weekly View wishes our readers and advertisers a very happy holiday season and a joyous New Year!
Our office will be closed from Dec. 26-30 for a well-earned break, and will re-open Jan. 2! The next issue will be January 6, 2017!
