INDIANAPOLIS — Mayor Joe Hogsett recently announced the first 25 locations to receive new street lights as part of the city’s “Operation Night Light” program. The locations were determined after an analysis of the greatest areas of need by the Department of Public Works and community leaders.
Indianapolis Power and Light Co. will install the new street lights over the next several months. The first phase of the initiative will add a total of 100 street lights throughout the city, along with a study of street lighting in the city to help with the planning of future phases of the project. Studies have suggested that street lighting has several advantages, including reducing accidents and reducing crime.
“Operation Night Light” was launched in June following the mayor’s executive order that ended a 35-year moratorium on new street lights in Indianapolis. The locations for the new street lights were chosen based on several factors, including community growth, neighborhood requests and public safety concerns. Alley security lights are lights that are paid for by individual customers, neighborhood associations or businesses and are not included in Operation Night Light.
The Operation Night Light initiative is funded through cost savings, will require no additional tax dollars, and includes an unprecedented partnership with Indianapolis Power & Light.
