• On Aug. 6 at 11 a.m., the Mayor’s Peace Bowl Basketball Tournament will be held at Washington Park, 3130 E. 30th St. Come on out and cheer on the good people who are working (and playing) hard to bring peace to our fair city.
• Also on the 6th, there are a couple of Indianapolis Fire Dept. open houses: at 1 p.m., Station #29 at 602 E. Pleasant Run Parkway N. Drive, and at 1:30 Station #14 at 2960 N. Kenwood. This is a great chance for us to visit our local first responders and say thank you for keeping us safe.
• Did you know this week’s GenCon (Aug. 4-7) supports local charities? This year’s charity partner for one of the biggest gaming events in the country is the PourHouse, which helps homeless individuals in our community. A big shout-out to the GenCon organizers, and the PourHouse!
• On Aug. 10 at 2 p.m., East District will hold their monthly Task Force meeting at headquarters, 201 N. Shadeland Ave. (south entrance of the former Eastgate Mall). Task Force meetings are a great way to get information about IMPD’s efforts to make our neighborhoods safer.
• Many Irvington residents and organizations have gathered together to replace the old Town of Irvington sign on the eastern boundary. Artists interested in designing the new sign should visit https://goo.gl/qjS1rp for specs. Deadline for designs is Aug. 21. The neighborhood will vote for the winning design; the winning artist will receive $1,000 plus up to $300 for project supplies. The new sign will be installed in October.
• The Missionary Baptist Ministers’ Alliance (BMA) and Concerned Clergy held the 2016 Summer Fellowship Collaboration, a three-night revival from July 19 to 21, on the campus of Martin University to show its support and raise financial support for the state’s only predominately black institution of higher education. On July 22, the BMA and Concerned Clergy presented Martin University President Dr. Eugene G. White two checks and the three-night offering that totaled $20,000 from the event.
• The Indianapolis Public Library is moving closer to a new branch in Perry Township. Schmidt Associates of Indianapolis has been contracted for architectural design services. No site has been yet identified for the new library. Other projects are nearing completion, including the renovation and expansion of the E. Washington branch, and the renovation of the Warren and Southport branches.
• Development on Tap’s next meeting will be Aug. 25 from 4-6 p.m. at The Platform, 202 E. Market St. The meeting will look back at the transformative work of Centers for Working Families and how they are evolving into neighborhood-based workforce training centers. Space is limited; register on Eventbrite.com and search for Development on Tap. Registration is free.
