INDIANAPOLIS — The Southeast Neighborhood Development Corporation (SEND) will host a free community event and self-guided “Return to SEND Bike Tour” on Sat. July 16.
The family-friendly gathering will kick off at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Kroger at 680 Twin Aire Drive, just south of Southeastern Avenue and east of Hoyt Avenue. Participants can check-in and get tour maps until 1 p.m.
Information about a range of services and resources, including bike safety training courtesy of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Southeast District, will be available until noon.
The tour will begin in the Twin Aire neighborhood, one of eight urban areas recently designated a federal “Promise Zone” by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The route goes past properties that SEND has helped redevelop and repair as well as other points of interest, including the Wheeler Arts Center, Garfield Park, Clayton & LaSalle Park, the “StreamLines” installation at Prospect Falls, and Fountain Square Plaza.
There is no cost to participate, although for $10 participants will receive an event T-shirt and be eligible for prizes donated by members of the Fountain Square Merchants Association, among others.
The Twin Aire neighborhood is named for the popular Indianapolis Twin Aire Drive-in Theatre and Twin Aire Shopping Center that thrived in the area during its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s.
Register and order T-shirts for the 2016 “Return to SEND Bike Tour” on eventbrite.com. Visit the Facebook page for details.
