Operation Night Light Begins

INDIANAPOLIS — The City of Indianapolis recently began the installation of 100 new streetlights across Indianapolis, ending a 35 year moratorium on new street lights. The first phase of the “Operation Night Light” initiative is funded through cost savings, will require no additional tax dollars, and includes a partnership with Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL).
The installation of new streetlights has been found to enhance public safety efforts and community pride, leading to an increased sense of security, rising home values, and improved quality of life. Local law enforcement leadership applauded the decision to launch Operation Night Light.
Additional streetlights will be installed with consideration of the following factors:
• Community Growth: A portion of the lights will be allocated to areas that have seen neighborhood development and community expansion in the last three decades.
• Neighborhood Requests: For several months now, the Mayor’s Action Center has been accepting requests for the installation of new streetlights. These requests will be combined with neighborhood requests, collected by Mayor’s Neighborhood Advocates.
• Public Safety: The Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, will look at focus areas and accident rates to determine streets with the highest public safety need.
The first streetlight is located on Nowland Ave. between Oakland Ave. and Parker Ave. on the east side.
Over the next thirty days, the Mayors Action Center will continue accepting Phase One requests for new streetlights. Residents can make a request by calling (317) 327-4MAC, Monday through Friday 7:30a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
