• The Community Hospital East Auxiliary will sponsor a Strawberry Fest on Thurs., June 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until supplies are sold out. Strawberries, ice cream and cake for $4.00 per serving. Payment by major credit card or cash.  Proceeds to benefit hospital programs/services.Community Hospital is located at 500 N. Ritter Ave.
• Governor Mike Pence has honored Lawrence Township Schools Amy Beverland Elementary School Principal Susan Jordan with a posthumous Sagamore of the Wabash award, one of Indiana’s highest civilian honors. Jordan was killed pushing two students out of the way of a school bus during school pickup in January. Jordan’s daughters, Lisa Jankowski and Amy Dinwiddie, and Jordan’s brother Bob Kelley, accepted the award in a private ceremony in the Governor’s Office. The Governor was also joined by State Senator Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) and Jordan’s friends and family.
• More than 18 jazz legends will be at the Madame Walker Theatre Center on Indiana Ave. in a tribute to the jazz legends of Indiana Ave. May 27 beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are only $10 and include a soul food dinner for an additional $10. • Congratulations to the Hubbard Life-Changing Teacher Award winners and School Leadership Award winners named recently by IPS. Teachers  Daphne Draa, Center for Inquiry School 2; Antonia Powell, Arlington Woods School 99; Marleen Signer, McFarland School; and Stella Vandivier, Marion County Jail School were honored. In addition, Principals Julie Bakehorn, Arsenal Tech and Magi Higgs, Rousseau McClellan School 91 were noted for their achievements.
• Speaking of IPS, the public is invited to Town Hall meetings to discuss grade configurations and other topics important to the future of the city’s schools. The next meetings on the east side include: May 31 from 9:00 -10:30 a.m. at the Julia Carson Center, 300 E. Fall Creek Parkway N. Dr.; District 4 on June 4 from 9:00-10:30 a.m. at the Concord Neighborhood Center, 1310 S. • An Art Exhibit of student’s work from the Oberting Art School will be Friday, June 3rd from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Historic Benton House, 312 S. Downey. Free and open to the public. Donna Oberting, an eastsider, has been an art teacher over 30 years.
