Andrew Luck Book Club

Popular Indianapolis Colts Quarterback, Andrew Luck has started a new book club. A passionate lifetime reader, Luck often recommends books for other players and has become known as the team’s librarian. On the club’s website, Luck states that the book club’s goal “is to share some of the books I’ve enjoyed, and to build a continually-growing community of readers of all levels by engaging through social media.”
The club divides readers into “Rookies” (children) and “Veterans” (adults). The first Rookies book is Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. Published in 1990, the book centers on an orphaned boy’s search for a home in a fictional town. While searching, he develops a reputation for fearlessness, athleticism and respect of all. Luck stated that this was one of his favorite books as a child. My daughter read it in sixth grade and still refers to it as one of her favorite books.
The first book for Veterans is Daniel James Brown’s The Boys In the Boat: Nine Americans and their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Every story ever told about the 1936 Berlin Olympics has been interesting, but this one is great. It tells the story of nine working class boys from the West Coast of the USA who struggle to win a coveted spot in the Olympic rowing competition.
Luck plans to be actively involved in book selection during the offseason. “Guest Athletes” will serve in that capacity during the NFL season.
There will be on line discussions, questions and answers, and more. Go to www.AndrewLuckBookClub.com to learn more about involvement in this great endeavor.
The books are available at Bookmamas.
