INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Public Library’s Shanika Heyward has been named a “Mover and Shaker” in the library industry by the national publication, Library Journal.
In the March 15 issue, Library Journal named 54 outstanding professionals committed to providing excellent service and shaping the future of libraries. Heyward, who has served as Manager of the East Thirty-Eighth Street Branch for the past four years, was selected because of her commitment to the profession and her efforts to attract more individuals in her neighborhood to use the Library.
Library Journal honored Heyward for her organization of such activities as Breakfast with a Cop, weekly GED classes, a summer food program for children, and story times for children in day cares enhanced by the addition of STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) components.
With a deep familiarity of the neighborhood in which she was born and raised, Heyward has established partnerships with more than 40 non-profits, businesses, churches and universities to benefit East Thirty-Eighth Street Branch programs and services.
