• IMPD East District Task Force will meet Aug. 12 at 2 p.m. at headquarters, 201 N. Shadeland Ave. The public is encouraged to come to these meetings, where they’ll get the scoop on public safety initiatives in East District, crime stats, and an opportunity to get to know the officers in our area.

• The Feast of Lanterns recently announced that they’ve received a large sponsorship from Angie’s List, which virtually assures that the festival will take place this year. The Lanterns Foundation, which is raising money to support this eastside tradition, still needs money though to pay for security, lights, and the thousand other things that go into putting on the Feast. If you or your business would like to contribute, visit indyfeastoflanterns.com/donate
• One of the major deterrents to crime is lighting. Keeping a porch light on, or having a motion detector light at the back of your house can help keep criminals at bay. But public lighting — lights on streets and alleys — can make a big difference in a neighborhood’s safety. If you notice a streetlight or alley light out, contact IPL as soon as possible. You can report lights out online at www.iplpower.com
