LAWRENCE — Lawrence Mayor Dean Jessup recently renamed a portion of Franklin Road Officer Craig Herbert Way in honor of the Lawrence police officer who was killed in the line of duty 10 years ago. The dedication took place on March 5 at 11 a.m. at 4518 N. Franklin Road. No addresses will change because it is a honorary designation.
Officer Herbert, 34, had been on the Lawrence Police Department five years when he was killed on March 5, 2005. A stolen Dodge Caravan driven at speeds of more than 100 mph by a 15-year-old boy was being pursued eastbound on 46th Street by another police officer when it crossed the CSX railroad track and went airborne, landing at the intersection of 46th and Franklin. It then smashed into the driver’s side of Herbert’s patrol car, which was northbound on Franklin at 46th.
