• The Great American Smoke Out is Nov. 20. Indiana has one of the highest rates of smoking in the country, with about 26 percent of the population smoking (2010 studies). Compare that to a national average of 18.4 percent.
• The Stutz Artists Association’s most festive art showcase will take place Dec. 5, 5-9 p.m. The Annual Holiday Exhibition and Open Studios event provides guests and art lovers the opportunity to view and buy exceptional art. As part of IDADA First Friday event, more than 25 artists will open their studios to visitors, giving them not only an opportunity to see where and how the work is created, but also the opportunity to purchase the art. Artwork ranges from paintings, drawings and photography, to sculpture, jewelry and furniture. The Stutz is located at 212 W. 10th St.
• During the winter months, residents will start their vehicles, in an effort to warm them up, leaving the vehicle idling and unattended. Often the vehicles are left unlocked with the keys in the ignition, leaving an opportunity for the vehicle to be stolen. During the months of October, November, December and January, IMPD typically processes a large number of stolen vehicle reports. It is suspected that the majority of these vehicles reported stolen were left unattended, idling, and unlocked. Typically, IMPD will see a spike in reported stolen vehicles when the temperatures have reached 32 degrees or below. So the message is: DON’T LEAVE YOUR CAR RUNNING AND UNATTENDED!
• Emerson Heights Neighborhood will have a meeting Nov. 20 at 6:45 p.m. at Wallace Street Evangelical Church, 4805 E. 10th St. This is last official meeting for the year.
• There will be a public information meeting regarding the Mass Transit “Orange Line” proposal that will run through Beech Grove on Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Elton H. Geshwiler Senior Center, 602 Main St.
• The East End Story Syndicate will be featuring a “Near Eastside Story Slam: Traditions” on Nov. 21 from 7-9 p.m. at Tin Comet Coffee, 2119 E. 10th St. Come to the event and tell stories of traditions you love or hate. Or you can just kick back and listen with a nice cup of coffee and your neighbors.
• There will be a meeting of the New Palestine Town Council on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 42 E. Main St.
• Congratulations to Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza for being named by Yahoo! Travel as the Best Pizza in Indiana! This comes on the heels of a surprise visit by none other than Alton Brown, who tried the Slaughterhouse Five pizza, then went across the street to try some great soup, chips, and then hopped back over for a brewski. Is Irvington becoming a food destination or what?
