Irvington Signal Box Painted by Local Artist

Irvington artist Laura Hildreth recently completed the signal box at the corner of Ritter and East Washington St. The scene is a glimpse of Irvington life when it was home to Butler, plus the various interesting characters the neighborhood is known for.
In 2013, the artwork on the signal box was damaged when the old Post Office building fell down on the corner. Rather than try to recreate the work, it was decided to give it a whole new spin. Laura’s work was selected; she started painting in mid-October. A clear protective coat will help preserve the work.
Foundation East, the program that brought 20 artists and their works to signal boxes on the east side, was created a few years ago by Vishant Shah and Aaron Story. However, due to a job transfer, they are winding down the collaboration. Foundation East will be participating in the Magic #8 Bus event as part of the Spirit and Place Festival on Nov. 8 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at Old City Hall, 200 N. Alabama, as one of their last collaborations. The event is free; visit www.spiritandplace.org for more information.
