• Poet Tom Richards was very appreciative of the opportunity to read his poems at Bookmamas in August, and sent along a note praising Kathleen Angelone for providing a chance for local writers to get their start. His work appeared in “This Side and That.”
• On Nov. 8, there will be a Breakfast of Champions event at the Irving Theatre, part of the city-wide Vonnegut Fest 2014. There will be readings from Breakfast of Champions and a Vonnegut Lookalike contest with the winner receiving a $200 prize! The event begins at 10 a.m. and is catered by Au Bon Pain.
• Congratulations to everyone who braved the cold on Nov. 1 to run the Monumental Marathon. In addition to all the grownups, about 1,400 students from IPS made the race, and over 300 volunteered on the course. Twenty-nine schools participated this year.
• Three authors with Indiana ties were honored with the 2014 Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award on Oct. 25 at Central Library in Indianapolis. Michael Shelden, a professor at Indiana State University, was recognized as the National Author winner. Shelden is the author of five biographies, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist, Orwell: The Authorized Biography. The award carries a prize of $10,000. Norbert Krapf was named the Regional Author winner, earning him a $7,500 prize. Krapf is a former Indiana Poet Laureate and author of 26 books, 11 of which are full-length poetry collections. The Emerging Author winner and recipient of a $5,000 prize is Kelsey Timmerman, author of Where Am I Wearing? A Global Tour to the Countries, Factories and People That Make Our Clothes and Where Am I Eating? An Adventure Through the Global Food Economy.
• The Indianapolis Public Library will be closed Nov. 11 to observe Veteran’s Day. In addition, the BMV has announced it will be closed for the holiday.
• The Indiana State Library has a number of volunteer projects that need help, including the Business Office Volunteer Project. The library offers flexible shifts are available for volunteers during the Library’s normal hours of operation Mon. – Fri., 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. The candidate gets the opportunity to learn some of the very necessary details on the business side of running a library. • Individuals of all ages are invited to meet Barbara Rosenblat, one of the country’s most beloved and sought-after narrators of audiobooks, who will discuss her career on Nov. 10 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Central Library in the Clowes Auditorium, 40 E. St. Clair St. Following her presentation, Rosenblat will be available for autographing. This program is presented by the Library and Recorded Books.
The Indiana State Museum opens a show next Sun, Nov 8 on Irvington artist William Forsyth. Foundation East commissioned artist Rita Spalding to paint a traffic signal box at the intersection of E. Washington and Emerson, near his home, which is nearing completion. She did a wonderful job painting a homage to Forsyth!
