• There will be a free viewing of “One Year of Extremes – Did Climate Change Just Hit Home?” on Friday, Oct. 17, 7 p.m., at Downey Avenue Christian Church, 111 S. Downey Ave. Hosted by the Eastside Creation Care Network, the film will be followed by refreshments and discussion.
• More than 4,000 residents joined in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease on Oct. 12 and raised more than $675,000 in Marion County alone. It was a wonderful turnout for a great event.
• Speaking of great turnouts, the Indianapolis Mega Adoption event Oct. 11 and 12 brought in record-breaking crowds. More than 900 cats and dogs found fur-ever homes. There were 24 animal rescue agencies and nonprofits, as well as Indianapolis Animal Care and Control at the State Fairgrounds. All the animals were spayed or neutered and microchipped.
• Not enough great things can be said about this year’s Irvington Garden Club Farmer’s Markets. The last one on Oct. 12 was very well attended, with great music and food, as usual. A big round of applause for the organizers of this monthly happening in Ellenberger Park. The club is very active all year round; if you are interested in gardening, please consider joining. Winter meetings are held the last Monday of the month at the Irvington Presbyterian Church, 55 Johnson Ave., at 7 p.m. Visitors are welcome.
• On Nov. 1, Lawrence Twp. will hold a big pet event from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Waggin’ Tails Bark Park, 10450 E. 63rd St. Admission is $5 per person, and an additional $5 per dog for the dog-owner costume contest (cash prizes!). There will be lots of dog and pet activities. All dogs must be on leash outside the park. Proceeds go to benefit the Girl Scouts “Forever Home” and the Humane Society of Indianapolis. • Emerson Heights will have its fall cleanup on Oct. 25 from 9 a.m.-noon. Meet at Walnut and Dequincy.
• Two great events at the Irving Theater, 5505 E. Washington St. First, on Oct. 17, “Shocktober in Irvington” at 6 p.m. will be on stage, featuring short films from local filmakers in the horror vein, and a costume contest, raffle and much more. Tickets are $10 or $2 off with your Irvington Ghost Tour ticket. Then, on Oct. 22 at 8 p.m., watch the 40th Anniversary showing of “Young Frankenstein” for only $5 at the door!
• Mark your calendar now for the Heated Love fundraiser for the Hope Fund on Nov. 8 at 4:30 p.m. at Downey Ave. Christian Church. It will be a soup bowl fundraiser to benefit the Hope Fund in memory of Jack Eichacker. Inside will be bowls and plates for sale and plenty of free soup, salad and dessert. There will also be a silent auction and a raffle. Admission will be $5 at the door. Bowls and plates will vary in price from $2 and up. The Hope Fund is a nonprofit that provides counseling to low or no income people with depression and other mood disorders.
