INDIANAPOLIS — Westminster Neighborhood Services, Inc. hosted a topping-off ceremony for its new Family & Adult Services Center on Sept. 10 at 2325 E. New York St.
The $3.8 million facility is expected to open in December. Services provided will include a food pantry, soup kitchen, clothing closet, adult education classes, an opportunity resource center, counseling and medical services. Westminster will gradually increase its hours and times of service once the move is complete.
WNSI has served at-risk children and families in the Westminster/Holy Cross and Willard Park neighborhoods on Indianapolis’ Near Eastside for over 30 years. The organization began as a summer youth program of three area churches and quickly evolved into an afterschool and basic needs program.
As programming continued to develop and grow, Westminster’s board formed a strategic plan for major expansion starting in 2010. Last year the organization secured 11 parcels for a new adult services center. Westminster’s current location, at 445 N. State Ave., is a century-old church that isn’t handicap-accessible and doesn’t have adequate space to meet the existing needs of the community.
The 16,000 square-foot Family & Adult Services Center is the first phase of three for WNSI. Additional plans call for a new children’s services center in the neighborhood.
