• Rita Spalding is currently painting a homage to Irvington painter Forsythe, who lived just kitty-corner from the signal box she is working on. Working in such a high-traffic area has taught her how to “suck it in” as she says, but she’s resisted people telling her to do her work on a wrap so she doesn’t get hit by a car. This is the response she posted on Facebook recently: “I prefer original art out there. There’s so many signs and replicas that we’re bombarded with, that it feels more special to me that it’s hand painted. There’s also something really special about neighbors watching the progress in their daily commute. Most people don’t have access to watching the artistic process, and I think it adds to the sense of ownership & inclusion for everyone to SEE on a daily/weekly basis how it’s created. And yes, it’s susceptible to weather/damage/graffiti, but it will be protected via clear-coat. And fingers crossed that it’ll last for years and years…”
Rita is an amazing artist and person. Check out the process on this box — just slow down!
