• The very talented Jennie DeVoe will be performing a benefit concert for IMPD’s K9 unit on Aug. 2 from 5-9 p.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery, 3400 Boulevard Place. Meet K9s Bradway, Athena, and Loena and enjoy great music. Tickets are available at the door for $15 (kids under 12 are free). Order tickets in advance at Crownhillfoundation.org for $10.
• Busking is coming to Indianapolis in a big way! Busking is individuals or small groups performing music, poetry, magic, or skits for tips from passerby. From about 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. each Friday and Saturday through Aug. 23, street performers under the leadership of IndyFringe will busk in various public places downtown, including Georgia Street, Monument Circle and up and down Mass Ave. How European!
• Theater-lovers are ramping up for IndyFringe’s 10th anniversary. On Aug. 1 from 6-9 p.m., there will be a First Friday Visual Fringe at the Indiana Landmarks Gallery, 1201 N. Central. Collages by Mark L. Smith and Multiples by Flatbed Press artists will be featured and for sale. A portion of the proceeds go to IndyFringe to help support their efforts to bring original theater to Indianapolis.
• Speaking of art, check out Encounter: A Sci-Fi and Fantasy Art Experience at the Garfield Park Arts Center from Aug. 2-30. The show features the fantasy/sci-fi related artworks of local artists. There will be an opening reception on Aug. 2 from 2-4 p.m. GPAC is located at 2432 Conservatory Dr. Visit www.gpacarts.org for more information about this exhibit.
• According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, July 2014 will go in the record books as the coolest July on record, with an average temperature of 70.2 degrees. A scant two years ago, Indianapolis recorded the hottest July on record, with an average temperature of 84 degrees.
• The Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission will hear the east side Pennsy Trail addition plans on Aug. 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the Public Assembly Rooms of the City-County Building. If you can, go to the public meeting to hear more about this exciting new phase of the Pennsy.
• The Lawrence Art Center will hold a Mural Painting Community Day on Aug. 2 from 1-4 p.m. They will be painting two murals, one at the center at 4437 N. Franklin Rd. and the other at 4719 N. Franklin Rd. No experience is necessary; artists will be on site to give instructions. Visit www.lawrenceartcenter.net or stop by the center during business hours to register to help out.
