Applause!: April 11-18

• There will be a meeting about the Emerson Avenue Corridor project that was originally created in 2007 on April 15th at 7 p.m. at Community Hospital East. The public is invited to come out and hear about where the project is headed.
• Long-time Irvington resident and Garden Club member Paula Rominger-Lewis will be honored for her efforts to make the neighborhood a better place on April 13 from 3-6 p.m. at the Benton House. It is a free event; come out to say “hi” to a wonderful lady.
• Emerson Heights Community Organization will hold a meeting on April 17 from 6:45 p.m.-7:45 at Wallace Street Evangelical Church (4805 E. 10th St.). The neighborhood is bounded by 10th, Michigan, Linwood and Emerson.
• The Fountain Square commercial district has been home to many innovative and unique businesses. Looking forward to Hotel Tango Whiskey, which will open in August. It is the nation’s first veteran owned distillery, and will be producing whiskey, gin, moonshine, and vodka at 702 Virginia Ave. They will have a tasting room, but most of the building will be devoted to distilling artisanal spirits. Indy native Travis Barnes and his wife Hilary are the owners.
• The City of Greenfield Street Department plans to have a Mulch and Compost Give Away. A loader will be available on April 12 from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. Greenfield residents can go get the free mulch and compost at the City’s Waste Water Treatment Plant on South State St.
• The Indiana Writers’ Center will host a special presentation to celebrate National Poetry Month on April 13 at 7 p.m. at the Indianapolis Arts Center, Arts Cultural Complex Foyers at 67ths St. off College Ave. There will be an open reading — bring  your own poems or favorite poems to read. Book selling and signings will be held.
• April 13-19 is National Tele-Communicator Week, celebrating the hard work and professionalism of 9-1-1 dispatchers. These folks are the first line of communication in a crisis, handling thousands of calls every year. The Marion County Sheriff’s Department has 160 dispatchers who handle police runs over three shifts. The Indianapolis Fire Department has 34 dispatchers who handle fire and EMS runs, working across four shifts.
• The Naptown Roller Girls will be skating April 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Marsh Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Admission is $17; $10 for 7-12. For more information, call 522-1958 or visit www.naptownrollergirls.com
• To paraphrase the Starks of Winterfell in Game of Thrones, “Spring is Coming.” According to the Midwestern Regional Climate Center, the average last freeze in this area is around April 21, only a couple weeks away.
