• The Chili Supper at the Bona on Oct. 19 was terrific. The Spirit Paranormal folks were on hand to talk about their investigation of the Bona Thompson Center. They confirmed that there are spirits of a positive nature in the building. Thank you to Steve, Sue, Paul, and the team from Spirit Paranormal for a very interesting presentation. • Jeff Bennett, Warren Township Trustee, said “Halloween is our Christmas,” referring to the million activities going on around Halloween on the east side in general and Irvington in particular. He is so right!
• Leaf season will begin Nov. 4 and end Nov. 30 this year. Each household is permitted 40 bags of leaves for weekly disposal. Use large plastic trash bags or large paper lawn waste bags and place them at least 3 feet away from your trash cart at the curb for pick-up on your regular trash day. Better yet, mulch them into your lawn, or mulch them and put them in your compost heap at home. Your garden will thank you!
• Edward Albee’s At Home at the Zoo will be presented Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 25 – Nov. 10 at Theatre on the Square, 627 Massachusetts Ave. Tickets are $12 Reserved or $10 for Seniors/Students with ID and $15/$12 at the door. Acting Up Productions is doing some very interesting theatre in town; they are based in Lawrence.
• VSA Indiana was selected as one of five local arts organizations to compete for votes at Sun King’s CANvitational. Thanks to the crowd support, they were selected as the winner of $5,000 to support their new Arts Access First Friday Series in their adaptive studios (location at 1505 N. Delaware, in the Harrison Center for the Arts). Nov. 1st will feature a Leaf Printing workshop led by Master Teaching Artist, Emily Compton.
• Meet some local authors at Bookmamas during the Historic Irvington Halloween Festival. On Oct. 26, from 1-3 p.m., authors Saundra Mitchell (Defy the Dark, The Vestpertine, The Springsweet and The Elementals), Garry Ledbetter (Murder at the House of Blue Lights) and Capt. Robert Snow (Slaughter on North LaSalle, Looking for Carroll Beckwith) will be signing and discussing their respective books.
• The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) wants to hire approximately 25 seasonal employees for winter maintenance operations in the Indianapolis Subdistrict. Seasonal employees will be paid $15 per hour and scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week. Employment is expected to begin in November and last through April. INDOT is currently accepting applications until Nov. 7. Applicants must apply at the Indiana State Job Bank for Job ID #586446.
