INDIANAPOLIS — Irvington Development Organization (IDO) and the Irvington Historical Society (IHS) have received a $50,000 Historic Preservation Fund grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology toward the ongoing renovation of the Historic Irvington Post Office.
The grant — which will be matched one-to-one with private dollars — help fund specific exterior improvements to the building. These improvements include: masonry repairs, new windows and doors, and the construction of a new storefront. The total estimate for this phase of construction is $117,000, with another $100,000 allocated for the current phase of stabilization and a new roof.
Vacant, dilapidated and facing demolition, the building was purchased last year through a partnership between IDO and IHS and is currently being renovated.
For more information about the rehabilitation of the Historic Irvington Post Office building or to make donations to the project, visit www.irvingtonpostoffice.org or contact the Irvington Development Organization at 260-0669 or margaret@irvingtondevelopment.org.
A fundraiser for the building will be held at the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, 5350 E. University Ave., on October 12th.
