• On Labor Day, an East District IMPD officer took a report of stolen bikes in Irvington — a 7 year old girl had just received the bike as a birthday present, and her 8 year old brother’s bike was also stolen. The family was very upset, and the officer noted that the hard-working family didn’t have a lot of resources, so he took it upon himself to buy two bikes with money out of his own pocket to help them out. Thank you to this officer, and the many others, who help out in a time of need.

• The Lawrence Parks Department is inviting the People Over Fifty –Five (POFF) to participate in the 13th annual Fishing Tournament on Sept. 6 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Jenn Memorial Park at 10450 East 63rd Street. Because the tournament will be catch and release, no fishing license is required. Tackle of choice, a fishing pole and an attitude of fun are all that is mandatory for those who plan to fish. If you don’t fish, bring your favorite cards, board games or enjoy the music, visit the zoo, and spend some quality time with friendly people. Following the fishing tournament, stick around for lunch, provided by The City of Lawrence Parks Department. Awards will be presented to participants of the fishing tournament, but everyone will have a chance to win prizes by playing Bingo. For more information, contact Sharon Francis at the Lawrence Park’s Department, 549-4836.
