• Make it a point to support local independent businesses during “Independents Week” July 1-7. The American Independent Business Alliance started Independents Week years ago to highlight the economic power of locally-owned independent businesses. We’d encourage every one of our readers to support the many local businesses who advertise in our paper — let them know you saw their ads in the Weekly View independent newspaper!
• Local artist Nancy Lee (her workshop is in the Brookside Industrial Complex) has completed a new book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Making Metal Jewelry. The book launch will be Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. at Indy Reads Books, 911 Massachusetts Ave. She’ll be doing live demos using a torch and anvil outside, weather permitting, plus signing books. Congratulations Nancy!
• As part of the IDADA First Friday Art Walk, the Harrison Center will be offering FoodCon IV, celebrating the art and culture of food in Indiana. It is a great place to learn about raising goats, bees, and more, plus co-op groceries, urban farming, and a host of other interesting topics. The Harrison Center is on the corner of Delaware and 16th St.
• Ben Asaykwee, director of Q Artistry, and Tiffanie Bridges blew the doors off the Lockerbie Pub on June 22 during their Blues Brunch. They were joined by the ever-talented Claire Wilcher for a couple of tunes. It was great to see so many people from the neighborhood come out and support them.
• The Marion County Fair cordially invited Paula and Ethel to be judges for the adult talent competition on June 24. There were many talented performers, and it was very difficult to choose! Part of the fun of the county fairs is the neighborly competition — whether it is for who makes the best apple pie, or who can sing. All the participants are winners. Great job! (Now next year, we’re angling to be judges in the cake or pie competition . . . we’re really qualified in that area!)
• Just a reminder that the Weekly View will be closed June 30-July 5 week so we can all have some “me time” — or at least some time away from the office. The four of us (Paula, Jeanne, Judy and Ethel) will be in and out throughout the week, and checking e-mails and that kind of thing. Thank you to all our readers, writers, and advertisers for making the Weekly View possible! Have a wonderful and safe Fourth of July.
