INDIANAPOLIS — The Greater Indianapolis NAACP has rolled up its sleeves to help increase the graduation rate at Arsenal Technical High School. Through a partnership with the John H. Boner Community Center and the high school, the NAACP is providing adult tutors to assist students struggling to pass the End of Course Assessments in Math and English that are required for graduation in Indiana.
During the fall semester, the program was piloted with 16 students and 11 adults who met once a week after school for 6 weeks. The adults helped the students improve their reading comprehension skills through lessons prepared by Tech High School staff. This semester, the program will be expanded, targeting especially those seniors who have their last opportunity to pass the test this May. Tutors are asked to give time once a week from 2:45 to 4:00 p.m. to work with seniors, or from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. to work with 10th and 11th graders. A one hour training session in provided and required, and volunteers must also provide a Criminal background check. To volunteer or for more information, contact Sandy Reiberg at sandyrei@aol.com.
