The exhibit, sponsored by The Indianapolis Public Library’s African-American History Committee, has grown to become one of the city’s premiere cultural events while providing an avenue for African-American artists to showcase their works. The exhibit will feature works in a variety of artistic mediums throughout Central Library surrounding the theme, “World Outside My Window: A Silver Soiree.”
Participating artists include Eric Shelton (mixed media), Jerome W. Chambers (oil, pencil), D. delReverda-Jennings (acrylics), Anthony Radford (mixed media), Kevin Johnson (mixed media), Brittany Tate (photography), Al Brown (acrylics, water color pencil), Michele Wood (acrylics, book illustrator), LaShawnda Crowe-Storm (mixed media, quilts), Michael Gillespie (mixed media), Dennis Green (sculptor), Quinn Hartzol-Toney (handmade jewelry), Flora Jefferson (handmade jewelry), Regina Brown (dolls), and LJ McCaleb-Doucoure (photography). A youth exhibit coordinated by Art With a Heart also will be featured.
The entire community is invited to meet the artists and enjoy an evening of cultural entertainment during the Meet the Artists Gala Reception on Feb. 9 from 5:45 – 10 p.m. at Central Library. This free event will feature a number of performers, including Staci McCrackin and the Euphony Band; Walter King the Spellbinder of Magic; Lamar Campbell & the Spirit of Praise Gospel Choir; poets Kadiesha Ricks, Tasha Jones and Gabrielle Patterson; and the Sterling Designer Showcase Fashion Show, coordinated by award-winning fashion designer Alpha Blackburn.
Also during the Gala, Tammy Sutton-Brown, Indiana Fever center and author of the children’s book, Cree & Scooter Hit the Slopes in British Columbia, will read to children in the Learning Curve. Sutton-Brown will join other local African-American authors for book sales and signings throughout the evening.
