Landmark Building Saved on East Side

IRVINGTON — Irvington Development Organization (IDO) has partnered with Irvington Historical Society to purchase a historic former post office building at 5502 E. Washington St. The two organizations had been in negotiations for several months with the owner of the building, which sits on the northeast corner of Ritter Ave. and Washington St., and recently secured a loan from Citizens Energy Group to buy it. They now begin the process of securing funds for the renovation of the property, which has long been vacant.

“The building sits at a prime location in our upwardly trending Washington Corridor Streetscape, so our plans were to buy it, stabilize it and sell it to save a key historic Irvington business building and bring in a new business that will complement our community,” said Margaret Lawrence Banning, executive director of IDO. “We still need to find the funding for a very expensive renovation, though, and are currently seeking loans, grants and donations to make this happen as soon as possible. Once restored and sold to an appropriate buyer, this building could again be an asset to our community.”
