INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metro Police Department’s East District would like to remind residents that during the cold winter months, vehicle thefts increase due to drivers warming up their cars while they stay inside. But cars left running, unlocked and unattended, are quick and easy targets for thieves. Here are a few tips to avoid being a victim:
• Never leave your car running or the keys in the ignition when you are away from it, even for a moment.
• Keep valuables out of sight or in the trunk. Purses, credit cards, GPS systems, and cell phones in plain view only attract thieves.
• Always roll up the windows nd lock your car, even if it is in your driveway, garage, or in front of your home.
• Be alert when approaching your car, and have a plan of action in case someone attempts to steal your vehicle. Check around, under and in your vehicle for suspicious people, and immediately leave the area if you have any concerns for your safety.
• Only park your car in busy, well-lighted areas.
• If you have an alarm or other anti-theft device, use it.
