INDIANAPOLIS – RISE UNITED is now accepting applications for the third cohort of its Freedom Readers Fellowship, a 16-week training program that prepares parents and caregivers to become literacy coaches in Marion County schools while creating a pathway to stable employment for their families.
The Fellowship builds on RISE UNITED’s broader Freedom Readers program, which equips parents and caregivers with Science of Reading strategies they can use to support literacy at home. Through the Freedom Readers Fellowship, participants take that training a step further, preparing to bring those skills directly into local classrooms as full-time educators.
During the 16-week Fellowship, participants receive training in the Science of Reading through Marian University and the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI), along with hands-on classroom experience and professional development. Fellows complete more than 870 hours of training and earn $20 per hour while working as Instructional Assistants, preparing them to transition into full-time roles in education.
To date, RISE UNITED has trained 435 parents in the Science of Reading curriculum adopted by the State of Indiana.
