INDIANAPOLIS — The Museum of 20th Century Warfare, the staff at Fort Harrison State Park will host a WWI Battle Demonstration at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 at Fort Harrison State Park.
The Demonstration will highlight military tactics used by both German and Allied forces that fought against each other from 1914 — 1918. The event will be held outside regardless of the weather, just as the real battles were fought nearly 100 years ago. Event visitors are encouraged to dress for the weather.
This event is part of various military demonstrations held at Fort Harrison through-out the year. This is the third year that the World War I tactical has been at Fort Harrison State Park. Fort Harrison Military Reservation was a major training site for the US Army from 1906 to 1996. Fort Harrison played a large role in training soldiers for the Army for service during WWI.
The WWI re-enactors are unpaid volunteers who have joined reenacting units to get first-hand knowledge of what WWI soldiers experienced in the field. These re-enactors dress in authentic and/or reproduction uniforms that they have researched and acquired. They use WWI era equipment and weapons to drill, exercise and simulate combat situations.
There is no cost to attend the program, but the normal vehicle gate fee applies. Fort Harrison State Park is located at the corner of 59th and Post Road in greater Indianapolis. The Museum of 20th Century Warfare is located in Building 711 within Fort Harrison State Park and is open Thursdays to Sundays, 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. during the winter months. There is no cost to visit the Museum. For more information, please contact the visitor’s center at 317-591-0122.

INDIANAPOLIS — During First Friday at the Harrison Center May 3, it’s all about paying homage – to artists and particular artist’s distinctive styles, to our neighborhoods, to our homes and more. Two of the Harrison’s own studio artists, Candice Hartsough McDonald and Emily Gable will be featured. McDonald, an illustrator known for her brand, Cordial Kitten teams up with Emily Gable, who studied painting at Herron School of Art + Design and is part of the artist collective, Know No Stranger.
In the City Gallery, HCA artist Emma Overman’s new body of work, A Stroll Around the Block, was inspired by her Mapleton-Fall Creek neighborhood and the sometimes surprising discoveries made while strolling the streets close to her home. Overman has illustrated several children’s books and her work has been published in Edgycute: from Neo-Pop to Low Brow and Back Again, by Harry Saylor.
Gallery No. 2 features work by Herron School of Art + Design undergraduate printmaker, Christian Brock Forrer. In this show, Life Long Dreams, Forrer explores “the thoughts and emotions behind lost love and longing.” Also from Herron School of Art + Design, the Gallery Annex features Vessels – work by Bethany Knuckles, Emily Schorn and Katherine Thayer. In Hank & Dolly’s Gallery is HCA studio artist Bobby Gilbreath’s No Place Like Home.
Artists William Denton Ray and Quincy Owens have collaborated to curate their third themed group show in the Underground. For Homage, local artists have created work inspired by another artist.

The 2013 St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild’s Decorators’ Show House and Gardens at 3050 North Meridian Street will once again allow the public to tour a classic Indianapolis home with proceeds benefiting Wishard/Eskenazi Health Services. Interior designers and landscapers have been hard at work since February restoring and renovating the historic Schnull-Rauch house located just north of The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
Daily tours are open to the public from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The event runs from April 27th to May 12th (closed Mondays). Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at www.showhouseindy.org for $20 or $18 for guests 65 and older. Pre-Sale tickets can be purchased at select Marsh supermarkets for $18 through April 26th. Special group rates are also offered. In addition to the daily tours, there are many special events to enjoy. Free parking is available in the Children’s Museum parking garage and designated surface lots.
The historic Schnull-Rauch house was competed in April 1904 by Gustav and Matilda Mayer Schnull. Renowned architect and Gustav’s brother-in-law, Bernard Vonnegut (Kurt’s grandfather), designed the home. The home was designed in the Romanesque style with medieval features, such as the large round tower and crenellated porch. Throughout the home you will see his personal trademarks, including the heraldic shield carved in the woodwork and on stone arches. The home still features the original stained glass windows, hardware, elaborate mantles, hand-carved woodwork, and intricate inlaid floors and lighting.
In 1937, Gertrude Schnull-Rauch and her husband John G. Rauch Sr. purchased the home from her father’s estate. The Rauch’s made a few changes to the home including the addition of a master bath and four marble mantles from New Orleans. They installed black and white marble flooring in the billiards room which was reclaimed from the 1936 demolition of the Grand Hotel. In 1979, the home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1979, John G. Rauch, Jr. donated the home to the Junior League of Indianapolis for use as their headquarters and offices for non-profit organizations. In 2008, the Junior League sold the house and the property to The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
For more than 100 years the Saint Margaret’s Hospital Guild has provided funds for the programs and services of Wishard/Eskenazi Health Services. From its beginning in 1907 the Guild has raised nearly $11 million to support the work of Wishard/Eskenazi Health. This generous philanthropic support has benefited patients directly through programs and services such as: pediatrics, the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center, radiology, St. Margaret’s Diagnostic Breast Center, newborn and special care nurseries, the Midtown Community Mental Health Center, Wishard Ambulance Services and mobile mammography services. The Guild has also been a key supporter and strong voice for the construction of the new Sidney & Lois Eskenazi hospital and Eskenazi Health campus scheduled to be complete in December 2013. Through the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens and many other initiatives, the dedicated and compassionate members of the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild work tirelessly and enthusiastically for the benefit of patients and the mission of Wishard/Eskenazi Health. We are thrilled to collaborate with The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis on the 2013 Show House.

IRVINGTON — Robin Clark’s 8th grade Algebra students can “talk the talk” when it comes to the world of financial management and the Irvington Community Middle School students recently impressed a member of the U.S. House of Representatives with their command of financial terminology and concepts. So much so that Indiana 7th District Rep. Andre Carson enthused, “You guys are sharp!” during his question-and-answer session with the students on April 5.
Thanks to an invitation from Mrs. Clark., Rep. Carson paid a visit to one of her 8th grade “Financial Friday” class sessions. Last year, three groups in her Algebra class won the statewide Stock Market Game. This year, Mrs. Clark was asked to lead the Capitol Hill Challenge — the Stock Market Game played on a national level. She contacted Rep. Carson’s office, as Irvington is in the 7th Congressional District, requesting that the congressman come to Irvington Community Middle School and speak to one of her Financial Friday classes. Financial literacy is a subject that is close to Rep. Carson’s heart, as he has a significant interest in young people being conversational in the subject of finance.
“Where you guys are [with financial literacy] is phenomenal,” the congressman lauded the students. “Many Americans don’t know what terms like ‘dividends’ are.” Mrs. Clark’s students did. He continued, “This school is an incubator: it’s a way to prepare our future leaders.” Rep. Carson suggested that “the next Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Oprah Winfrey are in this school.” During his talk, he referenced the high performance of students in Finland, and he made a profound comment about the great responsibility of K-12 educators — that they are in the business of “nation building.”
Aside from the students’ demonstration of their proficiency in financial literacy, they inquired about the congressman’s role. For example, they asked about his congressional office’s budget and what it’s like to be a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Shrewdly, they also sought a stock tip, asking, “What stocks should we invest in?” Rep. Carson gracefully declined to answer.

INDIANAPOLIS — Celebrate the contributions of the nation’s libraries and enjoy a variety of free activities for all ages at The Indianapolis Public Library during National Library Week, April 14 – 20, 2013.
The week draws attention to the role of libraries and library workers in helping citizens access resources and programs. In 2012, over 4.2 million patrons visited the Indy Library to learn to use eReaders, attend early childhood storytimes, develop resumes and apply for jobs online, research school and business projects, attend book discussions and cultural programs, meet accomplished authors, and check out materials in various formats. These and other activities are available for free with the use of a library card.
As a community place that welcomes all regardless of socioeconomic levels, the Library continues to evolve with new technology offerings and services to remain a vibrant, relevant and essential part of citizens’ lives.
Each day during National Library Week, Library locations will present free programs that appeal to all ages and interests. Highlighted events include “Hot Jazz for Cool Kids” on April 14 at 2 p.m. at Central Library featuring a live performance by the Bill Lancton MG6 band that will introduce children and families to jazz music; the “CIBA Lecture Series” on April 17 at 7 p.m. at Central Library featuring a bicycling travelogue on Sicily; “Celebrate Earth Day at the Green Library in the Park” on April 20 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Garfield Park Branch; the “Naptown Rock Radio Wars” documentary showing and panel discussion on April 20 at 2 p.m. at Central Library featuring Indianapolis DJs from the ‘60s and ‘70s; and the teen mystery program, “In the Shadow of the Vampyre,” on April 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wayne Branch.
Also, visit during “Library Snapshot Day” on April 18 when Library staff will be taking photographs of patrons and employees to help make the Library story memorable and compelling.
This year’s National Library Week theme is “Communities matter @ your library.” To learn of National Library Week activities, visit any Indy Library location or go to www.indypl.org.

LAWRENCE — To get your own neighborhood watch together; contact Kim Fannin, Crime Watch Coordinator for LPD (549-9580). Set up a meeting and invite everyone who lives around you. Try going door to door to either tell people personally or create a small flier that announces the time, location and intent of this meeting. On the night you do meet, explain to everyone the benefits of working together to watch over each other’s property, and allow a police officer to speak to the group. The officer will be able to offer great tips and training that will help you protect your neighborhood more efficiently. It’s a good idea to have someone who can speak English and Spanish present so they can translate to residents who are not bilingual.
One final thing that is important to remember – although people who are part of a local watch group can help prevent crime, they are not trained to stop a criminal. Stress to the members of your watch group that they are not taking on the job of a Law Enforcement Officer; they are working with the rest of your neighbors to keep an eye on each other. Your group should work together to help deter crime, warn others of potential danger, but never put themselves at risk by trying to stop a crime on their own. If any criminal activity is spotted, the best thing to do is call either 911 or 545-7575 immediately!

INDIANAPOLIS — From mosaics and marshmallows to watercolors and wines, the Indiana Artisan Marketplace features one-of-a-kind handmade work by more than 200 artisans.
The 2013 Indiana Artisan Marketplace will take place April 6-7 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Expo Hall. More than 125 artisans from Indiana and an additional 75 artisans from Kentucky will showcase art and food selected as being among the best in Indiana and Kentucky by food and art jury panels created by Indiana Artisan and Kentucky Crafted.
The Indiana Artisan Marketplace is a chance to buy one-of-a-kind artwork and artisan food directly from the Hoosiers who make it, to meet the artisans and to share their stories. Visitors will meet and talk with artisans, and celebrate Indiana talent and creativity.
In addition to browsing the booths, visitors will enjoy Indiana music, live art and craft demonstrations, and food and drink tasting.
The work of more than 200 artisans in nearly 60 Indiana counties has been juried into the organization and is part of the Indiana Artisan brand.
Indiana Artisans include painters, woodworkers, winemakers, jewelry designers, weavers, makers of specialty cheeses and more. Executive Director Eric Freeman says, “An Indiana Artisan is a Hoosier recognized for careful attention to detail, knowledge of a craft and an entrepreneurial spirit. His or her talent contributes to Indiana’s reputation for quality work.”
The Marketplace will be at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, Expo Hall. Admission is only $10. Visit www.IndianaArtisan.org for more information and a list of participating artists.
