World War I 100 Years Ago: Feb. 3-9

From The Indianapolis Star, Sunday, February 4: Anxiety was the predominant note in conversations yesterday in Indianapolis public places following the news of the United States break in diplomatic relations with Germany following Germany’s notice to resume undersea warfare on all shipping within the war zone. While all seemed to take for granted that this was the only course left open to the United States, it was believed it would not be done until an American ship had been sent to the bottom. Eager hands grabbed extra newspaper editions containing the latest developments; older men no doubt for business reasons, but many younger men realizing, no doubt, that if war finally is declared it will be upon them that the burden of the nation’s honor rests. While uneasiness was felt by all, the sentiment seemed to be “America Above All.”
