INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Propylaeum recently selected Executive Director of the Harrison Center, Joanna Taft, as a winner of The May, the organization’s highest distinction, recognizing women whose sustained leadership and civic impact strengthen Indianapolis and communities across Indiana.
Formerly known as the May Wright Sewall Leadership Award, The May carries forward the legacy of May Wright Sewall — educator, suffragist, and founder of The Indianapolis Propylaeum. Additionally, Sewall is credited with founding the John Herron Art Institute, which became the Herron School of Art and Design; The Art Association of Indianapolis, which became the Indianapolis Museum of Art | Newfields; The Indianapolis Woman’s Club; and The Contemporary Club, among others.
Joanna has this same spirit, carrying forward Sewall’s legacy through the founding of Herron High School, supporting emerging artists and patrons through the Harrison Center, and blending contemporary technology to foster cultural preservation at the Polklore Micro-Museum. Her nearly 25-year career exemplifies Sewall’s pioneering commitment to building institutions that enrich both civic and cultural landscapes.
Tamara Winfrey-Harris, President of the Women’s Foundation of Indiana, also received recognition for her work as an advocate, writer, and speaker who believes in the transformative power of ideas to shape a more just and inclusive society.
