INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) today announced that essential operations will continue uninterrupted while many others will be prioritized online, following recent mayoral direction regarding social distancing in response to the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.
Indy DPW will prioritize the safety of its staff by encouraging members who can perform all their duties off-site to telework. Solid waste crew members and other critical operations staff will continue their daily work as scheduled with specialized care to prevent the potential spread of the coronavirus.
Solid waste partners Republic Services and Waste Management have a continued understanding with Indy DPW that all trash pick-up operations are currently expected to proceed as scheduled.
As many Indy DPW office staff will work from home, the general public is encouraged to avoid a trip to the City-County Building downtown by taking advantage of many services online. Via indy.gov, residents can:
• Contest a parking ticket: Email parking.citations@indy.gov with questions.
• Discuss a stormwater lien release: Email stormwater@indy.gov with questions.
• View a meeting of the Board of Public Works or the Public Works Committee.
With recommendations against congregating in larger public groups, Indy DPW will be reviewing the feasibility of auxiliary programs such as neighborhood clean-ups that normally require close group interaction.
Indy DPW will also suspend many public engagements by its staff, including a public open house regarding a Pennsy Trail extension, which had been scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 at the Warren Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library. This meeting will be rescheduled if possible and the project information made available online.
Indy DPW management will continue to work with its various union staff and leadership to ensure a safe working environment. Procedures enacted may include intensive sanitizing of common facilities, staggering operations to limit time spent in close proximity to other workers, and restricting access to common spaces as necessary.
Following direction from City leadership, Indy DPW will continue to monitor the changing situation to make changes to procedures appropriately.
