INDIANAPOLIS —The Battle of Russia, a 1943 film directed by the legendary Frank Capra, will kick off the 11th year of Vintage Movie Nights at Garfield Park Arts Center. Film historian Eric Grayson will screen the film at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Center, 2432 Conservatory Drive, Indianapolis.
Capra oversaw this wartime documentary effort, which stitched together newsreel and archival film to explore relations between Russia and the United States. The film also recounts Russia’s military history through the use of stock footage and clips from Sergei Eisenstein’s “Alexander Nevsky.” According to Grayson, particular attention is paid to the Battle of Stalingrad, during which Soviet forces fended off Nazi troops attempting to seize control of the Russian city.
Showing “real film on real projectors,” Grayson will introduce the film and a short feature and conduct a Q&A afterwards.
Admission is $5. Concessions are $1. For further information, visit www.gpacarts.org or call 317-327-7135.
