IRVINGTON — Amidst a Presidential campaign that seems almost surreal, a new exhibit at the Bona Thompson Center connects politics and the Land of Oz. Political buttons beginning in the 1930s and representing all levels and parties of the political arena — from the collections of Steve Nicewanger and the Madinger family — are displayed with memorabilia related to the Land of Oz.
On Sun., July 17 at 2 p.m., IHS President Don Flick will give a presentation, “Tracking Down the Yellow Brick Road: The Hidden Meaning Behind L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz.” Although Baum never claimed that his famous American fairy tale had a hidden meaning, some see it as a political allegory. Come listen to the arguments for and against, and make up your own mind. It will be a lively presentation. No admission will be charged, but a donation of $5 is suggested.
The Bona Thompson Memorial Center is located at 5350 University Ave. Call 317-602-2962 for more information about the Irvington Historical Society, or visit www.irvingtonhistorical.org/
