• The outpouring of love and support for Jack Eichacker and his lovely wife Mary Jane at Jack’s early birthday party on Aug. 10 at the Benton House was a tribute to the wonderful people they are, and the loving community they have built over the years. Many people who know him came by to share their thoughts with him, and Miss Irvington Halloween Festival sang a lovely rendition of “Moon River.”
• Avondale Meadows YMCA will celebrate their one year anniversary with a Community Day on Aug. 16 from 1-3 p.m. at the Avondale Meadows YMCA, 3908 Meadows Drive. Attendees will be enjoy exercise demonstrations, health screenings and a host of fun activities for kids and families. Everyone is invited to come celebrate.
• The Common Threads 2014 Quilt Show is “Harvest of Quilts” on Aug. 15 and 16 from 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. on Friday and 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church,3179 N 600 W, (Mt. Comfort Road), Greenfield. The members of the Common Threads Quilt Guild will have their quilts on display.
• Hoosier Salon and the Indianapolis Museum of Art are partnering for a special exhibit at the IMA in honor of Hoosier Salon’s 90th Anniversary. Forty-five works by 10 Hoosier Salon Best of Show winners will be showcased in the IMA Community Gallery Aug. 14 through Sept. 28. The exhibit begins with a reception Aug. 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Sutphin Fountain Room at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, 4000 N. Michigan Road. The pieces on exhibit are current personal favorites of the Best of Show-winning artists, chosen specifically for the IMA exhibit. All pieces in the exhibit are available for sale.
• The Indianapolis Library’s initial figures indicate a 12-year record of 59,182 children and families who experienced the joy of reading during The Indianapolis Public Library’s 2014 Summer Reading Program, “Read in Any Language,” which concluded on July 26. The 95th annual program, held at all Indy Library locations as well as the Beech Grove Public Library, attracted 24,639 children ages 6 – 11, 15,791 preschoolers, and 18,752 readers ages 12 and older. The preliminary totals exceeded last year’s record 58,901 participants. Local branches attracting record participation include East 38th St., East Washington, Garfield Park, Fountain Square, Glendale, and the Beech Grove Public Library.
• NEAR is hosting an Open Doors Tour of homes on Aug. 16 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. beginning at 1125 E. 10th St. (corner of Stillwell and 10th). The tour will include historic homes in St. Clair Place, the new homes on East 10th St., and much more. This will be a free tour of homes with lots of information about this up-and-coming area of Indianapolis.
