HANCOCK CO. — The Hancock County Children’s Choir was treated to the thrill of a lifetime when they received a standing ovation from a full house at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall. The choir participated in Mid America Productions Treble Choir Festival and was accompanied by the New England Symphonic Orchestra. Mrs. Ruth Dwyer, Associate Conductor of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, served as Guest Conductor.
After receiving the invitation last fall to sing at Carnegie Hall, the students, parents, and choir staff conducted a successful fundraising program thanks to the generous support of the community.
Students and chaperones arrived in New York on Wednesday, May 21 to begin a daily rehearsal schedule. During the time the choir wasn’t rehearsing, choir chaperones filled every minute by taking the students to famous places and historical sites in the city. They visited Central Park, Rockefeller Center, the Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central Station, and Times Square, rode on the subway, and strolled down the famed 5th Avenue. After a meal at Grand Central Station, the choir serenaded their waiter, and applause rose from all over the building.
Highlights of the trip were an afternoon spent at the newly opened 9/11 Memorial and Museum and Freedom Tower, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. A dinner cruise around Lady Liberty was the finale of this memorable trip.
The Hancock County Children’s Choir is accepting new members at this time. Membership in our upper ensembles is determined by auditions with Artistic Choral Director, Gayle Roschi. For more information regarding performances and auditions, please visit www.hancockcountychildrenschoir.org.
