Applause!: May 9-16

• Letter carriers from across Indiana will help to Stamp Out Hunger on Saturday May 10th, as a part of their 22nd annual food drive benefiting the state’s food banks. To participate in the 22nd Stamp Out Hunger food drive in Indiana, residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 10. Hoosier letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver the mail and take them to regional food banks and emergency food relief agencies.
• Local poet Liza Hyatt will be launching her new book of poems, The Mother Poems, on May 21 at 5:30 p.m. at Indy Reads, 911 Mass Ave.
• Emerson Heights Community Organization will hold their monthly meeting on May 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Si Greene’s Pub, 5109 E. 10th St. This will be a casual meeting, with the goal of getting to know your Emerson Heights neighbors.
• The Benton House Association is currently looking for Classy Cars for the 7th Annual Benton House Classy Car Show on September 21st from noon to 5 p.m. This event is now held in conjunction with the Benton House Tour of Homes. •  Every Dog Counts Rescue will be holding a fundraiser on May 15 called Doggy Style 2014. The event will be held on Talbott Street, 2145 N. Talbott, with doors opening at 7 p.m. Meet some survivor dogs, check out the silent auction — and there will be a drag show at 9:30 p.m. Proceeds go to benefit the charity. Admission is free; donations encouraged.
• The Nativity Catholic School fifth and sixth grade co-ed soccer team achieved a 6-0 season this spring and won their CYO division championship. Their next game is the semi-final city wide CYO championship round on May 12. Congratulations on a great season!
•  Many of the houses in Irvington used to have a privy or refuse pile on the property, and the Irvington Historical Society is interested in putting together an exhibit of the things people have found in their yards. If you’ve found pottery shards, coins, jewelry, or other unique objects when digging a new garden or putting in a patio, contact Charlotte Ottinger Flick at Cottinger@indy.rr.com with information.
•  Summer is almost here, and with it, a full schedule of concerts in Indy Parks. The first concert at Ellenberger Park, 5301 E. St. Clair, will be on May 24 at 6 p.m. featuring Martine Locke and Small Blue World. Concerts are free. The first Irving Circle concert will be on June 21 from 7-9 p.m. featuring Audio Diner. The Irving Circle is located at 236 S. Audubon.
