New Greenway on Far East Side Opens

INDIANAPOLIS – On Monday, June 29, Mayor Joe Hogsett, Indianapolis City-County Councilor Rena Allen, and the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) celebrated the opening of the Grassy Creek Greenway.
The project is the first of two phases that will help connect the Far Eastside community to Grassy Creek Regional Park, as well as the Grassy Creek Environmental Center, which opened in 2025. Together, the two phases will add approximately 4.5 miles to the city’s trails and greenway network.
Indy Parks acquired 75 acres of additional land that was added to Grassy Creek Park in 2021, protecting additional greenspace on the city’s east side. In 2024, Indy DPW purchased an additional 21-acre parcel for floodplain preservation and protection. At over 240 acres, Grassy Creek Park is one of the city’s largest parks.
The 1.6-mile greenway is a $3.3 million investment into the city’s trails and greenways network, helping better connect neighbors to city amenities. The greenway stretches from Mitthoeffer Road to Carroll Road, with Grassy Creek Park in between.
The next phase, which will connect from Grassy Creek Regional Park at 30th Street to the Pennsy Trail, could see construction as soon as 2031. The project is projected to cost approximately $14.7 million, which will largely be paid for through Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization. The project was awarded nearly $14.1 million in funding earlier this year.
