INDIANAPOLIS — The sisters of Zeta Iota Chapter of Irvington-Indianapolis East proudly celebrated Tri Kappa Week February 16-22. The purpose of Tri Kappa is “…to bring women into close, unselfish relationship for the promotion of charity, culture and education.” The chapter’s dedication and support of these endeavors continue to make a difference within the community and the lives that it touches.
Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc., commonly known as Tri Kappa, is a unique philanthropic organization existing only within the boundaries of the state of Indiana. Seven young ladies met at the Girls’ Classical School of Indianapolis (May Wright Sewall) and founded the sorority in 1901. Each girl was to begin a chapter in her hometown. From these humble beginnings, Tri Kappa has thrived throughout the state with 146 active chapters and 114 associate chapters, totaling almost 9,000 actively participating members. Irvington-Indianapolis East was founded September 11, 1961 and embraces charity, culture and education as its mission and purpose.
Zeta Iota Chapter members seek to fulfill this mission through active participation in fundraisers, community service and acts of kindness throughout the year. They raise funds with an annual Style Show event, Chicago bus trip, and holiday gift card raffle. All proceeds go back into the community in the form of educational scholarships, support of James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children and financial as well as physical donations to Ronald McDonald House serving Riley families, the Hoosier Salon and many more projects state wide. Each year our local chapter joins with the State organization to contribute approximately $1.5 million to Indiana charities and students. In the past 100 years Tri Kappa members have donated untold hours and millions of dollars to projects in the state of Indiana. Zeta Iota members also make donations to Old Bethel Food Pantry, Wheeler Mission, Horizon House, ICAN Food Pantry @ Downey Avenue Christian Church, Golden Living Center and the Homeless Initiative.
