• Monsignor Paul Koetter, Pastor of Holy Spirit Church, was selected as Distinguished Pastor among seven in the entire country. Father Paul is the only one from Indiana. This is a very prestigious award from the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) for exceptional support of their parish schools.
• David Leander Williams book, Indianapolis Jazz: The Masters, Legends and Legacy of Indiana Avenue, will launch on Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. at Bookmamas (9 S. Johnson Ave.). The book was published by The History Press, and looks great.
• Dave Combs and Holly Apeel Combs — two of the wonderful artists responsible for painting the signal boxes on the east side — will be having a First Friday event at the Athenaeum on Feb. 7 from 6-9 p.m. They are the founders of the Department of Public Words, and will be presenting new works exploring the power of words.
•A site survey for the proposed criminal justice complex is pointing toward a location near the airport. Several east side locations were discussed at one point, including the former RCA site at Sherman and Michigan, the old Citizens Coke plant on Prospect, and the former Visteon plant on English Ave.
• It’s really telling that we’ve had a rough winter when you can’t remember if this is Polar Vortex 4, or 5, or whatever. The Weather Channel is calling this latest one Nika, though I’m sure what we’d like to call it isn’t quite as pretty.
• Film historian Eric Grayson will present the second in a trilogy of Marx Brothers’ classic films when he screens Animal Crackers (1930) at Garfield Park Arts Center on Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. The monthly Vintage Movie Night selection stars the four Marx Brothers and Margaret Dumont. • View the works of 18 prominent local African-American artists through March 22 at Central Library. The entire community is invited to meet the artists and enjoy an evening of cultural entertainment during the Meet the Artists Gala Reception on Feb. 8 from 5:45 – 10 p.m. A special First Friday event will be held on March 7 from 6 – 9 p.m. during which the public can attend artist demonstrations and enjoy music and refreshments.
