(INDIANAPOLIS) – The National Medical Association (NMA), the nation’s oldest and largest organization representing over 50,000 African American physicians and the patients they serve, recently installed Virginia A. Caine, M.D., as its 125th President during its 122nd Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly in New York City.
Dr. Caine, an infectious disease expert, serves as director and chief medical officer of the Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD). In addition to her work with MCPHD, NMA, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Caine is an associate professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine’s Infectious Diseases Division, adjunct professor at the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at Indiana University Indianapolis, a past president of the American Public Health Association, and was named an Indiana University Bicentennial Professor.
“I’m honored to serve as the 125th president of this prestigious organization,” said Dr. Caine. “We must lead the continued fight against inequities in public health policies, public-funded private delivery methods and financing that impact the access and quality of care, and specialized medical education that ensures a diverse healthcare workforce.”
