INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Public Schools will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an annual televised program from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m on Jan.18. With the theme “Let There Be Peace on Earth and Let It Begin with Me,” the program will be broadcast live from the historic Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School, 1140 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. St. It also will air in classrooms throughout the IPS district and the local community via cable TV. Following the program, the IPS Crispus Attucks Museum, located at the high school, will present an award-winning video documentary and discussion on the life and legacy of Dr. King. Both programs are free and open to the public.
Central Indiana residents who have the holiday off can come downtown and take advantage of a number of free offers. Every year, the Indianapolis Zoo, IMAX Theatre, NCAA Hall of Champions, Indiana State Museum, the Children’s Museum, the IMA, Indiana Historical Society, and the Rhythm! Discovery Center will be open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and offer free admission with a donation of one non-perishable food item per person, per attraction. There will be special events to mark the day.
In addition, the Madame Walker Theatre Center will stream the Presidential Inauguration ceremony free inside the historic theatre at 11 a.m. Prior to the program, there will be a FREE community breakfast at the Indianapolis Urban League (777 Indiana Ave.) starting at 9:30 a.m., followed by a “Freedom Walk” back to the Madame Walker Theatre Center at 10:30 a.m. Visit www.walkertheatre.com for more information.
