From The Indianapolis News, Monday, July 23, 1923: The annual Feast of Lanterns, sponsored by the Brookside Civic League, will feature a pantomime by children of Midsummer Night’s Dream Wednesday night in beautiful little Spades Park. Gyrating gnomes in red suits will amuse King Oberon while fairies clad in the colors of the rainbow will entertain Queen Titania amid dancing butterflies. After the performance, the Indianapolis Newsboys Band will provide music. Brookside women have charge of the festival booths featuring fortune telling, home-made candy, refreshments, and other items which may be purchased. Five thousand necklace-like strands of Japanese lanterns will be strung throughout the park and homes around the park will also be decorated. It is expected that 10,000 citizens from all over Indianapolis will attend the event. Proceeds of the festival will go toward civic improvement and neighborhood betterment.
